Altered Images, a ground-breaking, multi-sensory accessible visual arts exhibition, which aims to introduce new ways of seeing and experiencing art for both disabled and non-disabled people opened in the Ballina Arts Centre yesterday evening and will run until September 30.

Culture night at Ballina Arts Centre

Since its launch in 2006, Culture Night has grown from being a Dublin-only phenomenon to expanding this year across the country. On Friday September 25, arts and cultural organisations will throw their doors open beyond normal closing hours, and welcome visitors of all ages for a taste of free culture for one night. Ballina Arts Centre will be open until 10.30pm that night and is presenting a programme of events and activities aimed at all ages, with something for all tastes. Culture Night is an initiative co-ordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Sport, and Tourism in partnership with Mayo County Council and participating venues.

This year Culture Night will take place on Friday September 25 and Ballina Arts Centre is presenting a programme of events and activities aimed at all ages, with hopefully something for all tastes. The programme includes Shortscreen Cinema, where a number of short films will be shown from 5pm to 6pm and 8pm to 10.30pm. Viewers can drop in and out of the cinema. Many of the films to be screened were made through the Filmbase Shorts scheme. Waiting Room, made by a number of local teenagers during a workshop at Ballina Arts Centre in 2007, will also be screened.

Ballina Arts centre redevelopment

The redevelopment of Ballina Arts Centre launched The Final Push programme last Wednesday. The new state of the art, centre for Ballina has got funding from various sources and those behind the project launched The Final Push in Murphy’s Longnecks during the week. The campaign needs to raise €500,000 locally for the project and they are asking for local support for it. Art portfolio preparation

Mayo County Council’s EXCEL 09, is a developmental programme of arts events for teenagers and young adults across the county. As part of this year’s programme there will be a free Portfolio Preparation Talk, for those who are interested in going to art college, in Ballina on Thursday November 26.

On the road at Ballina Arts Centre

On Tuesday December 1, Ballina Arts Centre will host Oska Bright: On the road. This unique film event is brought to Mayo by the Arts and Disability Networking Partnership an initiative of The Arts Council, Arts and Disability Ireland and Mayo County Council Arts Office.
